Cost-Effective Investments in Children's Oral Health (18 May 2012)

In Colorado, 2,198 children under age 6 were treated for dental disease in hospital operating rooms in 2009 to fix their rotten teeth, at a cost of $8,234,210 to Medicaid. In 2010, more than 115,000 dental hospital visits in Florida carried a price tag of $88 million, with about one-third of the visits paid by Medicaid. According to the Pew Children’s Dental Campaign, in 2009, more than 800,000 ER visits across the country related to preventable dental conditions, a 16 percent increase from 2006. Driven by access issues, these ER visits impose significant costs on already troubled state budgets. Listen to the Pew Children’s Dental Campaign and state leaders discuss examples of investments in children’s oral health and areas for significant cost savings.

Certified Safe Farm: From Research to Practice (22 May 2012)

Kelley Donham, Director of Iowa's Center for Agricultural Safety and Health will be providing an introductory webinar on the Certified Safe Farm (CSF) program

The CSF program began as a research project in 1996 and has expanded with CSF programs being currently evaluated in Iowa, Nebraska, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and New York. The CSF program consists of four main components: 1) occupational health screening, 2) on-farm safety review, 3) educational opportunities, and 4) incentives. The program has been extensively evaluated, and in comparison to control farms, the CSF farms have decreased rates of respiratory illness, increased use of PPE, and reduced medical care costs of up to 47% compared to controls. This webinar will provide a brief overview of the program with a focus towards the on-farm safety review.

State and local health departments across the United States are the backbone of a public health system that promotes health and prevents disease. Public health institutes (PHIs) are nonprofit organizations that improve the capacity and performance of the public health system by fostering innovation, leveraging resources, and building partnerships across sectors, including government agencies, communities, the health care delivery system, media, and academia.

This Web Forum will highlight the growing number of public health institutes and work they are doing to complement governmental public health agencies. We will discuss strategies for state and local health departments to work with public health institutes, with a special example from Louisiana.

Moving Research in Agricultural Safety and Health to Practice: The NIOSH r2p Program (06 Jun 2012)

How do we help assure that research becomes translated to controls and interventions that improve the health and safety of our farm population? Advancing Research to Practice through Community Partnerships (r2p) of the Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health (GPCAH) at The University of Iowa aims to do just that. A feature of the GPCAH r2p program is to conduct bi-annual webinars to facilitate the process of r2p.

This keynote webinar will feature a description of the NIOSH r2p program and how this program can assist our agricultural communities.

Partnering with NIOSH, the GPCAH will host a lead-off presentation by Dr. Max Lum, Distinguished Consultant in Communications and Research Translation. Dr. Lum will provide an overview of the NIOSH r2p program (including 2-3 general success stories). Additionally, there will be a presentation by Dr. George Conway, Director of the NIOSH Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing Safety and Health Program addressing r2p activities in agriculture.

Iowa's Center for Agricultural Safety and Health and the Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health will host a training program for health care professionals who treat and help prevent occupational illnesses and injuries on the farm. The event will take place June 11-15 at the College of Public Health Building at the University of Iowa.

The course will address diagnosis, treatment and prevention of agricultural health conditions through a multidisciplinary approach. Nurses, physicians, mid-level practitioners, physical and occupational therapists, paramedics, veterinarians, and other health or safety professionals are invited to participate. The course may be taken for three graduate credit hours from the U of I College of Public Health, and continuing education credits for physicians and nurses are offered. Topics to be discussed include agricultural health care delivery, respiratory diseases, acute agricultural injuries, behavioral health issues, zoonotic diseases, health effects of agricultural pesticides, musculoskeletal issues and ergonomics in agriculture, cancer in agricultural populations, and many others.

The 2012 National Conference on Tobacco or Health will be held Aug. 15-17 in Kansas City, Mo. The theme is "A New Era of Tobacco Control: Policy, Regulation and Prevention."

Presentations, panels and posters will focus on 13 program areas: cessation, communications and media, evaluation and surveillance, increasing diversity/eliminating disparities, legal issues, nicotine and the science of addiction, non-cigarette tobacco and nicotine products, tobacco regulation, tobacco control movement-skills building, tobacco control policies, tobacco industry and youth.

The National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health notified us that 2012 plans for National Rural Health Day are beginning!

Plans to celebrate the "Power of Rural" include week‐long activities beginning November 12th and observing Thursday the 15th as National Rural Health Day.

Last year Natl' RHD in Iowa was fun! It was a day in which many rural communities leaders, health care providers, local health departments, hospitals and clinics took time to celebrate our rural health care system and to acknowledge our precious Iowa rural culture.

Today the IA Rural Health Association Board made a commitment to support the 2012 Natl' RHD by having an IA Rural Health Spotlight web posting each week day of Nov. 12th that features a story about a rural health success or hero.

11th Annual Midwest Rural Agricultural Safety and Health Conference (14 Nov 2012)
