This 45-minute session will provide an overview of the Mental Health Leading Health Indicator (LHI), one of 12 LHI topics released by the US Department of Health and Human Services. The event will also highlight one program’s success around suicide prevention in a Tribal community.

Series Learning Objectives

To raise awareness of the Healthy People 2020 Leading Health Indicators (LHIs) and actions that can be taken to address them.

To examine the context in addressing each LHI topic.

To explore how states, communities, and organizations are addressing the LHIs using innovative and evidence-based approaches.

Beating the Heat: Preparing for Extreme Heat Events at the State and Local Level (23 May 2013)

The “Beating the Heat: Preparing for Extreme Heat Events at the State and Local Level” webinar will kick off the seasonal extreme heat outreach of the Climate and Health Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

During this webinar, CDC will discuss ways state and local health departments can be prepared for the coming extreme heat season and will highlight available extreme heat products that can be used for various audiences. Particular emphasis will be given to the recently released extreme heat guidebook. The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will discuss syndromic surveillance efforts in New York City. The Minnesota Department of Health will discuss Minnesota’s extreme heat toolkit, heat-related data they have collected and their work with local public health groups to prepare for extreme health events.

This is one of two webinars on extreme summer weather events co-sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Environmental Health/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and the American Public Health Association.

Recruiting and Retaining Oral Health Providers in Rural Communities: Successes from Idaho & Iowa (23 May 2013)

Join NNOHA and NOSORH to learn about how different organizations recruit and retain oral health providers in rural communities. Suzanne Heckenlaible, Vice President of Public Affairs at the Delta Dental of Iowa and the Executive Director of the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation, will present on the FIND (Fulfilling Iowa’s Need for Dentist) program, an initiative that is committed to connecting dentists and underserved communities with the resources needed to combat Iowa’s dental shortage. Dr. Dan Watt, Dental Director at Terry Reilly Health Services, will share how his Health Center has been able to successfully recruit & retain oral health providers, from big picture strategies to day-to-day efforts. For the purpose of this webinar, we encourage State Offices of Rural Health and safety-net oral health providers and their support staff to attend.

Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will:

Learn about the FIND (Fulfilling Iowa’s Need for Dentist) program, a powerful recruitment tool for rural Iowa communities to attract and retain a dentist.

Learn about a variety of unique partners, programs and resources that enhance and/or compliment the FIND program.

Understand what oral health providers are looking for in employment opportunities.

Acquire strategies to recruit and retain Health Center oral health providers.

Agricultural Medicine course offered June 10-14

Iowa's Center for Agricultural Safety and Health and the Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health will host a training program for health care professionals who treat and help prevent occupational illnesses and injuries on the farm June 10-14 at the University of Iowa College of Public Health Building, 105 River Street, Iowa City. The early registration deadline is May 10th, final registration deadline is May 28th.

The course will address diagnosis, treatment and prevention of agricultural health conditions through a multidisciplinary approach. Nurses, physicians, mid-level practitioners, physical and occupational therapists, paramedics, veterinarians, and other health care providers are invited to participate. College and continuing credit hours are available.

Topics to be discussed include: agricultural health care delivery; respiratory diseases; acute agricultural injuries; behavioral health issues; zoonotic diseases; health effects of agricultural pesticides; musculoskeletal issues and ergonomics in agriculture; cancer in agricultural populations; and many others.
